OZARK…Florine Colvin, a beloved woman, departed this life on Monday, December 27, 2021, at the age of 92. She was born to Flora Waters Colvin and Thomas Colvin, Sr. on June 2, 1929, in Ozark, AL.
Educated in Ozark’s public schools, she earned her undergraduate degree at Alabama State University, and a graduate degree at the University of Indiana. Florine taught for more than 30 years in elementary schools of the Ozark Public School System before her retirement.
A lifelong Christian, Florine joined St. John’s Catholic Church in 1965 where she was an active parishioner until the pandemic began. She lived a full life by loving and serving others in her beloved hometown of Ozark and the Wiregrass area. Her love was not confined to her family. She sought to serve the common good through her parish and countless civic and community organizations. One of her most prized honors was being selected as Woman of the Year by the Ozark Voters League in 1977.
Florine is predeceased by her parents; three siblings: Lewis Evans, Mary Jean Colvin Loman, and Thomas Colvin Jr.; and two sisters-in-law: Carolyn Trammer Evans and Alma Boykin Colvin; one nephew: Barry Evans; and one great-niece: Katoya Evans.
Remaining to hold and cherish her memory are seven nieces and nephews: Kathy Loman (Willie) Blackwell (McDonough, GA), Melva Loman (John) Chambers (Greensboro, NC), Leslye Colvin (Dothan, AL), Thomas Colvin III (Dothan, AL), Donna Loman Wells (Petersburg, VA), Angela Colvin Burque (Auburn, AL), and Michael Colvin Loman (Aberdeen, NJ); 12 great-nieces and nephews: Crystal Blackwell, April Blackwell, Brittany Colvin Danner, John (Cynthia) Chambers Jr., Erica Wells (Leonard) Jackson, Mackenzie Chambers (Chris) Kennedy, Don Wells II, Joseph Burque, Drew Burque, Eric Wells, Michael Loman, and Manolo Loman; nine great-great nieces and nephews: Kaylex Danner, Arielle Danner, Emani Jackson, Jonathan Danner II, Titus Kennedy, Logan Jackson, Tobin Kennedy, Tegan Kennedy, and Mina Kennedy; one brother-in-law: Melvin Loman (Petersburg, VA); and countless cousins, friends, and students.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the family will livestream the private Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, with Father Patrick Gallagher officiating. The interment will be at 11:15 am in Traveler’s Rest Cemetery, in Ozark with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing.
