Ken Cantley

December 12, 1937 — January 16, 2019

Mr. Ken Cantley, a resident of Ozark, died Wednesday morning, January 16, 2019 after an extended illness. He was 81.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, January 27, 2019 in the Earl Bankston Memorial Chapel with Reverend Dr. Billy Gaither officiating. Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Vivian B. Adams School, 2047 Stuart Tarter Road, Ozark, AL 36360 or to your favorite charity.

Mr. Cantley, son of the late James Vernon Cantley and Beatrice Mae Hobbs Cantley, was a native of Beverly, Massachusetts. Following graduation from Nichols College in Dudley, MA, he began to work with United Fruit Company (Chiquita Banana). He worked thirty-two years in various locations in the United States before moving to Ozark in 1995. In 1998, he received the Chester Freeman Lay Citizen Award for his Outstanding Service made to the cause of Recreations and Parks in Alabama specifically with the Kid Zone at Steagall Park. Mr. Cantley was a former member of the Ozark Rotary Club, taught the AARP Driver Safety Course in Ozark, and was a supervisor of the voting polls at the Ozark Civic Center. He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed playing tennis with his Wednesday night group. Mr. Cantley was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ozark and was formerly employed with Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home as a funeral assistant. He was preceded in death by his son, James Steven Cantley.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Shirley Cheshire Cantley, Ozark; his daughter, Wendy Brasher (Larry), Ozark; five grandchildren, Daniel Brasher (Molly), Phillip Brasher, Leah Brasher Campbell (Justin), Caleb Brasher, and Hannah Brasher; great-grandson, Paxton Fuller Brasher; sister-in-law, Charlotte Cheshire Jaroslawski (Dennis), Dothan; brother-in-law, Dr. Bryan Cheshire and wife, Dr. Sadie Cheshire, Shrewsbury, MA; niece, Karen Anthony and nephew, Johnny Jaroslawski.
