OZARK… Mr. Phillip Wesley Pope (Major, United States Air Force, Retired), a resident of Ozark, died early Friday afternoon, August 20, 2021, in a Dothan hospital. He was 96.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at a later date. Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Pope, son of the late Zell Pope and Willie Jewel Pope, was a native of Youngstown, Ohio. He moved to Georgiana, Alabama at an early age and was a graduate of Auburn University where he received a degree in Aeronautical Administration. Mr. Pope joined the United States Air Force and retired with the rank of Major. During his military career, he was a Korean War Veteran and served three tours on DEW Line in Alaska. Mr. Pope also sold insurance through Jefferson Standard Insurance Company and formerly owned and operated a Kawasaki Bike Shop in Biloxi, Mississippi. He also worked in real estate in Sand Destin, Florida before moving to Ozark in 1985. Mr. Pope was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ozark. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-seven years, Mary Claire Thesing Pope.
Surviving relatives include his daughter, Leslie James, Dothan; sister, Jane Blake, Huntsville, AL; grandson, Phillip Samuel James; great-grandson, Aston Samuel James.
