Walter Wade Martin of Skipperville, died early Sunday morning, October 8, 2017 in the Troy Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was 89 years old.
The family will receive friends from 5PM to 7PM Tuesday, October 10, 2017 and at 10 AM Wednesday, October 11. A memorial service will be held at 11AM Wednesday, October 11, 2017 in the Earl Bankston Memorial Chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alacare Home Health and Hospice 824 Highway 231 S. Troy, Alabama 36081.
Mr. Martin was born on September 10, 1928 in the Bertha Community of Dale County, to the late Lonnie Dee Martin and Flossie Barefield Martin. He lived most of his lifetime in Dale County, the last two decades in the Asbury Community. Mr. Martin served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, earning the Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Service stars, and the United Nations Service medal. He attended Morgan Baptist Church and was formerly an aircraft mechanic at Hanchey Field, from which he retired after 40 years of service.
Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Louise Kelley Martin; six sisters, Lonnis Martin, Miriam Snell, Ellen Martin, Lydia Parker, Corene Griggs and Ruby Smith and two brothers, J.D. Martin and James Harmon (Bill) Martin.
Surviving relatives include four daughters, Kathy Rhode and husband, Mark of Ozark, Judith Faye Vinson and husband, Mike of Freeport, Florida, Bonita Martin and Susan Arnett of Douglasville, Georgia, and Amelia Martin of Asbury; one son, Walter Martin and wife, Ellen of Columbus, Georgia; two sisters, Winifred Grantham of the Bertha Community and Helen Riley of the Echo Community; four grandchildren, Jason Johnson, Cristen Wientjes and husband, Gage, and Cody and Sophie Martin; and sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws from the Kelley family.
